The 20 Questions Book Tag

I recently stumbled across this tag over on Lala’s Book Reviews, which should come as no surprise considering Lauren’s seems to have all the best tags 😉 This is an older tag, but that is clearly not going to stop me! Let’s get to it!

HOW MANY BOOKS IS TOO MANY IN A SERIES?

This is entirely dependent on the series in question! I have read trilogies where I was like…yeaaaah, that’s enough. I have also read super long series (7, 8, 9, more) where I am always jazzed for the next. So my answer will have to be, as many as it needs!

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT CLIFFHANGERS?

I mean, I LOVE a great cliffhanger, even if they sometimes make me want to scream. A surefire way to make me NEED the next book is to leave me with a GREAT twist. I mean, Empire of Storms destroyed me with it’s cliffhanger, so you’d better believe I was reading Kingdom of Ash the DAY it came out.

HARDBACK OR PAPERBACK?

Hardcover for sure. I mean, paperback is fine, but my personal library consists almost exclusively of hardcovers for a reason. I think I have exactly one shelf of paperbacks, out of the 30 shelves that make up my many cases of books.

FAVORITE BOOK?

This is a multifaceted question and I will do my best to answer. My favorite standalone novel is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. My favorite series of all time is def Harry Potter. I also consider the Throne of Glass series, the Nevernight trilogy, and the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy to be favorites. There are another dozen books that would also make this list, but I won’t drag on.

LEAST FAVORITE BOOK?

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. This book is the literal worst and I hated every freaking minute of it. It doesn’t help that I was required to read this to get into HS AP English, so I couldn’t even DNF. No. I had to read the whole thing AND write a paper about it. THE. WORST.

*Please note, the fact that this was required reading did not in any way add to my dislike. In fact, The Posionwood Bible, which I listed as my favorite book, was ALSO required reading as part of the same trio of books I had to finish to get into AP English. It was just a horrible book.

LOVE TRIANGLE . . . YES OR NO?

Yes. I am all for a great love triangle, especially if the MC ends up with who I want them to. Even when this doesn’t happen (I’m looking at you Twilight), that’s what FanFiction is for, amiright?

THE MOST RECENT BOOK YOU COULDN’T FINISH?

I’m really not sure. It is extremely rare for me to DNF a book, and when I do I tend to block it out of my mind. I guess the one that I best remember DNFing would be Vassa in the Night. It was not good.

A BOOK YOU’RE CURRENTLY READING?

I am listening to Redwall on Audible and loving it! I grew up on the Redwall books, so this is a bit of nostalgia for me.

THE LAST BOOK YOU RECOMMENDED SOMEONE?

I make recommendations all the time here on my blog – its part of the job – so let’s go with the last book I recommended and someone actually read. For that it will be The Traitor’s Kiss by Erin Beaty, which I recommended to my friend Amanda. She loved it and also hated me a little bit after because those books are full of feels. Sorry, not sorry.

OLDEST BOOK (PUB. DATE) THAT YOU’VE READ?

Um…probably The Iliad and The Odyssey? I can’t think of anything older than that. If we disregard that (since I def read a modern translation) and went with something closer to the original form, it would most likely be Shakespeare.

Side note: if you have never seen Ben Crystal recite Hamlet in the original pronunciation, please do yourself a favor and do it now!!! If you want to spend an hour in absolute delight, you should also watch his lecture: Speaking the Bright and Beautiful English of Shakespeare. You’re so very welcome in advance.

NEWEST BOOK YOU’VE READ (PUB. DATE)?

I mean, I have read a bunch of ARCs for books that haven’t released yet, so that def counts. Right?

FAVORITE AUTHOR?

SO. MANY. Let’s just ramble off a list, shall we? J.K. Rowling, Laini Taylor, Sarah J Maas, Jay Kristoff, Lavyrle Spencer, Erin Morgenstern….the list goes on and on.

BUYING BOOKS OR BORROWING THEM?

Buying them. I haven’t actually been in a library in over a decade, and even that was just the library at college so I could use some resource books. I haven’t borrowed from a library in probably TWO decades. I have just always liked to own my books, especially because I love to re-read favorites.

A BOOK YOU DISLIKE BUT EVERYONE ELSE LIKES?

I wasn’t a big fan of The Cruel Prince, although I did like The Wicked King far more. I haven’t read it, so I can’t be 100% certain here, but I will say that I have zero interest in reading The Raven Cycle. It just doesn’t appeal to me at all.

BOOKMARKS OR DOG EARS?

Bookmarks for sure. I will VERY occasionally dog-ear a paperback, but it’s not a common occurrence by any means. I have a huge collection of bookmarks and like to match my bookmark to my current read. I also often use the flap of the book jacket to hold my place.

A BOOK YOU CAN REREAD OVER AND OVER?

So many. Again, I am a huge re-reader. But I’ll go with the obvious answer here and say the Harry Potter series.

CAN YOU READ WHILE LISTENING TO MUSIC?

Not even a little. I need either absolute quiet or some sort of white noise.

MULTIPLE POV’S OR ONE POV?

Either! I have loved books written both ways, so I’m all for whatever works best for the story. It’s worth noting that both of the books I am currently writing myself are written in dual POV.

DO YOU READ A BOOK IN ONE SITTING OR OVER MULTIPLE DAYS ON AVERAGE?

Both, equally. I am just as likely to finish a book in a single sitting as I am to have it last a few days. This depends entirely on how much time I have versus how long the book is.

I tag ANYONE who wants to join in!!!! If you do try this tag, link me so I can check it out; I can’t wait to see your answers!!!

  1. The Redwall books are so much fun to revisit! I have favorites that correspond with every season, they’re like old friends or a favorite sweater, great to settle in with for a long afternoon.
