Let’s Talk Bookish Fridays – Plot or Characters?

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, created and hosted by Eternity Books, where we discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts! The topics are posted monthly, and you can even submit ideas for future topics, so be sure to check it out!

This week’s topic is: Plot or Characters – which is more important and why?

So when I first read that this was the topic for the week, I had a moment of mild panic. How could I possibly decide which of these two crucial elements I deemed more important?! Could I even choose?! What is even happening?! And then I started to make a list to compare and realized in like 5 seconds that I already knew my answer. For me, it is always going to be characters.

Don’t get me wrong, a good plot is crucial to a book. HOWEVER, I think about all the “generic” contemporary and romance books I have read over the years, ones that recycle the same plot over and over (I’m looking at you Nora Roberts, with your fantasyish romance trilogies), but that I LOVE TO PIECES anyway because it’s the characters that I care about. Having a great cast can overcome lackluster story line, but it doesn’t matter how cool the plot of a book is if I have zero interest in the characters that live in it.

So for me, it’s always going to be characters > plot!

*Sorry for my rather short answer this week. Its been jammed pack and my creativity levels are on low. I blame NaNoWriMo.*

  1. Hmm, I see your point, so I guess it’s based on the book/series. If it’s one of those never ending series with the same recycled plot just with a different villain each time, then yes, characters are everything, but if it’s just a normal book, or a mystery, I’m team plot lol. The characters can be bland in a mystery, but if the plot is gripping and there is a lot of suspense, then that can save the book for me.
Great post and thanks for participating Megan 💖
