Top Ten Tuesday: Witches Edition

For today’s TTT we were given a freebie spot! Amanda and I brainstormed for the best prompt to represent Halloween week, and decided we’d share our Top Ten Witches! We spanned both literature and TV/Movies for this one, because we don’t like to limit ourselves 🙂

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl! If you want to participate, click the link to find the list of upcoming prompts!

Hermione Granger

We can’t have a witches list without including the Brightest Witch of her Age. She is literally us if we got the chance to go to Hogwarts – a total bookworm who sucked up any and all information presented to her about the magical world. I’d ace all my classes, too, if they involved magic!!!

Luna Lovegood

Obviously we could fill this list with HP characters, but we just have to add this one more. Luna marches to the beat of her own drum, and is unapologetically herself!

The Halliwell Sisters

Charmed was an awesome show, and the Halliwell sisters were pretty awesome too! If you never watched this show, go find it online now and do so!!!

Sabrina Spellman

Whether it’s Sabrina from the Archie comics, Sabrina from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, or Sabrina from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (my fave, not gonna lie), she is one fabulous witch!

Manon Blackbeak

Does it get any more badass than Manon? She drinks blood, kicks ass, has iron fangs and claws that pop out when she needs them to, and is just all around epic.

The Thirteen

So it turns out you CAN get more badass than Manon, but only by taking Manon and then backing her up with her Thirteen. The witches are wild and ruthless and utterly amazing. Aaaaaand now I am thinking about Kingdom of Ash and I need a minute to collect myself.

Before it became the hit Broadway musical, Wicked was (and still is) a freaking awesome book! In fact, there are actually 4 books in the series, although the focus shifts away from Elphaba as the series progresses. Elphaba proves that it’s not easy being green, although she makes it look that way!

Gillian and Sally Owens

Practical Magic is one of my VERY FAVORITE Halloween movies, and it was also based on a book by the same name (which I haven’t read, tbh). These ladies are fabulous and I will never not want to be them.

The Sanderson Sisters

Can we even have a Halloween-inspired Witchy post without including these three badies from Hocus Pocus? They are iconic, and I am SO EXCITED that we are getting a sequel movie on Disney+.

The Three Witches

MacBeth brought us the OG witches, and I am going to stop this post right here and end with their infamous scene from the play. You’re welcome.

Witch 1: Thrice the brinded cat hath mew’d
Witch 2: Thrice and once the hedge-pig whin’d
Witch 3: Harper cries: ‘Tis time, ’tis time.
Witch 1: Round about the cauldron go;
In the poison’d entrails throw.
Toad, that under cold stone
Days and nights hast thirty-one
Swelter’d venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i’ the charmed pot.
All: Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Witch 2: Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg, and howlet’s wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
All: Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Witch 3: Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf,
Witches’ mummy, maw and gulf
Of the ravin’d salt-sea shark,
Root of hemlock digg’d i’ the dark,
Liver of blaspheming Jew,
Gall of goat, and slips of yew
Sliver’d in the moon’s eclipse,
Nose of Turk, and Tartar’s lips,
Finger of birth-strangled babe
Ditch-deliver’d by a drab,
Make the gruel thick and slab:
Add thereto a tiger’s chaudron,
For the ingredients of our cauldron.
All: Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Witch 2: Cool it with a baboon’s blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.
Hectate: O! well done! I commend your pains,
And every one shall share i’ the gains.
And now about the cauldron sing,
Like elves and fairies in a ring,
Enchanting all that you put in.
Witch 2: By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes.

  1. Love that Hermione and Luna get top bill! Of course they belong on a list of top witches (though, I’ve always been really partial to McGonagall, personally). I absolutely LOVED book Elphaba (and was sort of disappointed that the later books weren’t really about her) before I’d ever even realized there was a musical.

    Here’s my TTT post.
