We always talk about all of our favorite bookish things, from 5 star reads to our OTPs, but today I feel like discussing my unpopular bookish opinions!
A popular book or series that you didn’t like.
Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter. I don’t know that this remained popular, but it did have it’s moment in the sun, and was even picked up by several big book boxes. In fact, this was the book in my very first OwlCrate (good thing the rest of the box was awesome, or I might have needed to end my OC subscription after reading this). Despite all the hype, I did not like it one bit. I *rarely* DNF a book, but I just couldn’t with this one.
A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love.
I don’t know? I honestly can’t think of any series that I love that are usually hated. I can think of plenty that I hate that people love! But we will get to that shortly.
A Love Triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with OR an OTP that you don’t like.
Twilight. I was, am, and always will be Team Jacob! Edward was…weird…and the dynamic between he and Bella was so co-dependent and unhealthy. Jake was so much more of a natural relationship for her – something even Bella admits – and I still ship that with all my heart. If anyone has any good Jacob/Bella fanfiction recommendations, PLEASE share them!!
A popular book Genre that you hardly reach for.
Horror, mystery, thriller. Any of that. It’s a hard pass for me.
A popular or beloved character that you do not like.
Severus Snape. Everyone makes him out to be this great hero, but he did some pretty awful things. I mean, the man literally bullied a bunch of 11-17yo students (Harry, Hermione, Neville, etc) for years upon years. He was not a good person. Dislike.
A popular author that you can’t seem to get into.
Julie Kagawa. I have tried many times to try to get into her books, but I just can’t seem to make it stick. I think her writing style is just not to my taste, even though her plot lines are always fabulous. I always give her another try, and it always falls flat for me. I guess it’s just not meant to be.
A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing. (examples “lost princess”, corrupt ruler, love triangles, etc.)
Mary Sue type characters. Girls that ditch their friends in favor of a new boyfriend. “I got skinny and now my life is great” storylines. I am a big fan of tropes, but stop picking crappy ones.
A popular series that you have no interest in reading.
The Raven Cycle. I know it gets tons of hype, but every time I read the synopsis I immediately know it is not for me. Everyone says it’s great, but I sincerely doubt I will ever pick it up. I just have too many other books that I want to read to waste on the ones I don’t care about.
The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or TV show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. That movie was SO GOOD! The book was fine, but I didn’t love Lara Jean, who came off as very juvenile for her age. The movie managed to cut out all the aspects of the book that I didn’t like, while leaving all the good stuff in! I cannot wait to see what they do with P.S. I Love You.
